Chat video maker for conversations that unfold on screen

MockupChat turns an illustrated conversation into a silent MP4: a typing indicator appears, then each message arrives in order. Use it for fictional text stories, product explainers and campaign storyboards. It does not send messages to real apps.

Build the scene for free. MP4 download requires Pro at $9.99/month. Free PNGs on WhatsApp, iMessage and Instagram include a watermark.

A café app story, from script to MP4

This original example uses the fictional Skipped the line iMessage template. It was exported through MockupChat's video export as a portrait MP4. The same conversation is available as a free PNG example for a slide or static post.

Silent fictional example, not a customer testimonial. Download the original MP4.

The conversation in the example

Maya: Are you already in line at the café?
Me: Nope. Ordered in the app on the way ☕️
Maya: Wait, no line at all??
Me: Zero. Sending you the invite link
Maya: 🙌

How to make a chat video

  1. Start from a short script. Open the example above or choose a chat template. Replace the names and messages in the editor. Keep a single idea per scene so viewers can follow the exchange.
  2. Check the phone and message order. Choose the app, iPhone or Android, and light or dark in the Chat tab. In Messages, make sure each reply belongs to the right sender. The video uses that order; it is not a screen recording of your editing session.
  3. Choose the video format. With Pro, open Export and select Video 9:16 (MP4), Video 1:1 (MP4), or Video 4:5 (MP4). The animation is rendered in your browser and then downloaded. Keep the tab open until it finishes.
  4. Review before publishing. Play the downloaded file, check that the text is readable and the last message appears, then add any captions, music or voice-over in your video editor. Label the scene as a mockup where it could be mistaken for a genuine conversation.

Video export questions

Is the chat video maker free?

You can write and preview a conversation without an account. Downloading an MP4 requires MockupChat Pro ($9.99 USD per month, including VAT where applicable). Free exports are watermarked PNGs on WhatsApp, iMessage and Instagram.

Which video sizes can I export?

Choose 9:16 for 1080×1920, 1:1 for 1080×1080, or 4:5 for 1080×1350. Each MP4 shows the conversation message by message with typing indicators.

Does the MP4 include speech or sound effects?

No. The export is a silent chat animation. Voice-note bubbles are illustrated messages, not playable recordings. Add a voice-over or music in your video editor if you need audio.

What if my browser cannot export MP4?

MP4 export needs a browser and device that can encode H.264 video. Try an up-to-date Chrome, Edge or Safari. If the editor reports that MP4 encoding is unavailable, use a supported device or export PNG screenshots instead.

For a static image, use the WhatsApp, iMessage or Instagram DM guide. Choosing between tools? Read MockupChat vs Mockly.

Use it responsibly

MockupChat makes mockups for content, ads, memes, storytelling, app demos and presentations. Don't pass a mockup off as a real conversation, put words in the mouth of a real person or customer, or use it to mislead anyone. Where a screenshot could be taken for real, label it as an illustration. The details are in our Terms.
